Background and personality info

Hikaru is the eldest son of the Hitachiin family, older brother to Kaoru Hitachiin. With no other siblings, these two were always together since they were born. Their mother, Natsugi Yuzuha, is a clothes designer, and usually made her kids work as models for her, even when they were little, and even if it was girls’ clothing. The twins always made fun of the fact that people couldn’t tell them apart (the only physical difference between them being the way they comb their hair), and usually furthered this confusion by pretending to be each other. When they got a maid that turned out to be trying to steal from them (the Hitachiin being a very important and filthy rich family), they made a deal with her, saying they wouldn’t tell on her or call the cops if she played with them. This maid/nanny turned out to have a lot of fascinating stories about tricking people to get money or to steal things, which the twins adored. Later, she escaped, and when the twins were asked if they’d given her the code to the safe, they cried- fakingly- in public for the first time. After this, they started to fake tears or smiles for their own benefit, sometimes even pretending to fight with each other to get their way.

Before middle-school, the twins had had very little interaction with people. They’d see the world split into two, one part being them and the other being the other people, who they considered stupid and useless. While in their first year of middle-school, they met Tamaki Suou, and decided to join the Host Club he’d formed, mainly for their own amusement. Hikaru’d take on the role of seme to his little brother, and they’d put on a ‘brotherly love’ show to please rich girls at their school.
Later on, when Haruhi Fujioka’d join the club, the twins would start to expand their little world. Haruhi was able to tell them apart easily, something that almost no-one had been able to do (I’m guessing no one other than their mother or Tamaki). They started to care for this girl despite themselves, even to the point where Kaoru’d be worried about Hikaru caring for her more than for him. This is proven wrong when after an incident where they split up, Hikaru run to hug his brother and forgot completely about Haruhi. Even so, they’re more affectionate with her than with pretty much anyone else.

Both Hikaru and Kaoru are pure evil, basically. They’re very smart, and because they were rich and could have pretty much all they wanted, they were always bored and looking for something interesting to do. And the most interesting things to do usually involved pulling pranks on people, or making fun of them in some way. When we see little!Hikaru and Kaoru, they’re much worse than their older selves, and they learn a lot about tricking people from one of their nannies, who is actually a thief.
They quickly learn that tears or faked emotions can make people worry easily and forgive them about things they’ve done.
The twins don’t care about people other than themselves, considering everyone else stupid or boring since they’re not each other. This is both due to their closeness (you hardly see one of them without the other), and because they ended up sick of people considering them just as ‘twins’ and not as two individuals. As much as the twins love to confuse people about who’s whom, they really don’t like it when people honestly can’t tell them apart. This is shown when Haruhi, for example, easily recognizes them even if they change their hairstyles. Both twins have no respect for anyone, but they do seem to listen to Tamaki when the situation turns serious. They’ll usually help the other members of the Club when they’re needed, specially if their intervention can stop them from being bored. Being so rich, they’re both fascinated and horrified by the ‘commoner’s’ style of life, something that all the members of the Club except for Haruhi share.

Haruhi once says that Hikaru’s “10% more evil” than Kaoru, which is probably true to an extent. Hikaru’s usually the master-mind behind their pranks, and Kaoru the one to make sure they work.
Hikaru is the more dominant twin, and can be bolder and harsher, since when he's worried or upset about something, he'll just blurt things out without thinking. He can be very impatient, and unwilling to try something he's not planned - like replacing his brother on his date with Haruhi-, and he gets easily jealous. Even if he can be very immature in that way, he can also be nice if he tries, something shown when he comforts Haruhi during the storm on the day of their date.
Even if Hikaru's opening up a little, and does like Haruhi a lot (you could say he's got a mild crush on her), Kaoru's still his number one priority, and he'll always worry about him first. Even during his date, he was thinking about taking something as a gift for his brother, and was happy that Haruhi thought of it, too.

After graduation, Hikaru was planning on following her mother's steps, and becoming a clothes designer, but only if Kaoru would agree on it. Not much changed within the Club, but Hikaru and Kaoru grew even closer to each other, if that's possible, after realising that even if not everyone else was a complete and useless idiot, they still liked each other the most.
